Why Organic?
The Conscious Bath Company supports Organic Agriculture. We believe that high-quality food is imperative to a healthy lifestyle. Having a soulful connection and thorough understanding of your food and health-related products dramatically increases ones wellbeing, physically, emotionally and mentally. We think food should be lovingly grown with the least amount of intervention, especially the inclusion of pesticides and herbicides. We believe that a chemical pesticide or herbicide that causes harm to an insect or bacteria can, in enough quantity, cause harm to humans and the earth itself, on an accumulative basis. Yes, we also appreciate the human body's ability to adapt to changing circumstances. But never before in human history has the human organism been exposed to such high levels of laboratory-produced combinations of chemicals that we have experienced since the 1950's, when the chemical industry was born. It’s not just one item here and there; we’re risking a lifetime of exposure as no other population of humans has ever experienced. In this day and age, animal, chemical and petroleum-based products are unnecessary in the cosmetics and soap industry and are ethically challenging to say the least. Vegetable-based products are readily available and we hope that consumers demand an increase in these types of products to the extent that Organic becomes the norm and is no longer “unique.”
The Conscious Bath Company utilizes Certified Organic ingredients whenever possible.
Base Oils: We only use vegetable-based Oils (Almond, Aloe Vera, Castor, Coconut, Hempseed, Jojoba, Palm, Palm Kernel, Olive) and unrefined Butters (Cocoa, and Shea) that have been organically grown and certified by qualifying agencies. In other words, no pesticides or herbicides were used in the growth of the crops. We order from multiple sources and lean toward suppliers who have developed personal relationships with the growers, who employ Fair Trade in their business practices and who are environmentally responsible.
Essential Oils: We use therapeutic grade, pure Essential Oils for their health enhancing properties and to add a pleasing scent to our soaps. Chemically-based perfumed fragrances are another, more common option with most soap makers, but we choose not to use synthetic fragrances because we desire natural, pure products to use on our skin; which means clean water exits our homes and re-enters the water system. Essential Oils were mankind's first medicines and they offer extremely therapetuic benefits to our overall health and they smell fabulous. Essential Oils are bio-degradable, but require a lot of plant material to produce a small quantity of Oil, so we use them in a balanced manner, enough to enhance the soap, but not so much that the growth of the crops is unsustainable. Essential Oils are derived from organic, wild or cultivated crops around the world and we use a proprietary blend of the following Essential Oils in our soaps: Bay, Bay Laurel, Black Pepper, Bergamot, Cedar, Citronella, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemongrass, Sweet Orange, Patchouli, Penny Royal, Peppermint, Tangerine, Tea Tree and Ylang Ylang. Essential Oils are created by steam-distillation (except citrus oils which are cold-pressed) of the plant leaves, flower petals and tree barks. Again, we lean toward suppliers of Essential Oils who work toward the advancement of organic agriculture and sustainability and who practice Fair Trade to the greatest extent they can.
Extras: Even the little extras that make each bar unique come from organic sources, i.e. 100% raw organic Canadian honey, organically grown oatmeal, organically grown lavender and calendula flowers and organic teas. Colorants are derived from organic plant materials, spices and clays, which mean no chemical dyes are ever included.
Our soaps are not yet Certified Organic although most of the ingredients we use ARE certified organic. Our soaps do meet the guidelines to qualify as an organic product, but as we have not yet completed the official certification process, we cannot label our products as “Certified Organic.” Once we’ve completed this certification process, we will become officially Certified Organic. Until then, we remain Unofficially Organic, at least in the eyes of the regulators.
